Historic Lewes Farmers Market Announces 2018 Scholarship Recipients

For 11 years, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market has awarded scholarships to small-scale Delmarva farmers to attend sustainable farming conferences including these conferences in the Mid-Atlantic: the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) Annual Farming for the Future Conference held February 7-10, 2018 in State College, PA; Future Harvest CASA Conference held January 11-13, 2018 in College Park, MD; the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Conference held January 30-February 1, 2017 in Hershey, PA. and the 9th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 25-27, 2018!

This year, scholarships were awarded to 6 farmers. Scholarships from the regular scholarship fund went to: Lisa Garfield of Calliope Farm, in Salisbury, MD; Henry Bennett from Bennett Orchards in Frankford, DE; Taylor Heydt, apprentice farmer in Lewes, DE; Hattie Allen of Hattie’s Garden in Lewes, DE and Hannah Grose of Oksana’s Produce in Chestertown, MD.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market has established an emerging women farmers’ scholarship fund in memory of Delaware farmer Debra Schaefer. Two farmers received a Debra Schaefer Scholarship for Emerging Women Farmers: Nyambi Royster of the Lighthouse in Philadelphia PA and Crisanne Borman of Baywater Farm in Salisbury, MD.

Consistent with its mission, the Board of Directors of the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers and emerging farmers who grow local fruits, vegetables and produce, and these scholarships help small Delmarva farmers become educated about sustainable farming practices.
